My dad, Lauro Cuevas, known to family and friends as Larry, was born on August 18, 1968. He has always been the quiet, steady anchor of our family. He is a retired driver, and together with my mom, they handle and take care of our home. Even on his slow, quiet days, Tatay Larry is always looking out for us, his three kids, in his own subtle ways. Whenever my brother or I could not take my sister to work, Dad would immediately step up to drive her, and he would always make sure to fetch her if it started raining. He is a simple, caring father who always puts family first.
What Happened
What started as a large, painful boil or pigsa on his back suddenly turned into a critical medical emergency. Because Tatay Larry is diabetic, the infection caused severe complications that landed him straight in the ICU. Upon admission, his blood sugar spiked dangerously to 400, though the ICU team managed to bring it down to a stable 140. Shortly after, his hemoglobin dropped to a low 9.9, requiring a blood transfusion to help bring his levels back up. Recently, his potassium levels also went up, so doctors gave him medication to stabilize them and protect his kidneys, doing everything possible to avoid dialysis.
Dad is currently conscious and being as brave as he can, but he is still in a lot of pain from his back. Once his body and vital levels are fully stable, he will still need surgery to clean and drain the infection properly.
Our whole family is doing everything we can to support him. Our mom is staying by his side in the hospital around the clock, while my sister and I take turns watching over him, massaging his back and feet just to give him a little bit of comfort. Our older brother is handling the hospital paperwork, finances, and doctor updates so Mom can catch a few hours of sleep when possible.
However, daily ICU charges, medicines, and laboratory work are piling up fast. Our running hospital bill is already around 190,000 pesos. While his HMO covers 100,000 pesos, that leaves us with an out of pocket balance of at least 90,000 pesos. This amount continues to grow and does not yet include doctor professional fees, ongoing ICU days, or the main surgery.
We are humbly reaching out to our friends, family, and kindhearted strangers for help. Any contribution, no matter how small, will go directly toward paying off his running hospital balance and securing his upcoming surgery so we can bring him home. If you are not able to donate financially, keeping Tatay Larry in your prayers and sharing this link with your friends and family would mean the absolute world to us.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much for your kindness, generosity, and prayers for Tatay Larry.
