Help me startup a semi-nonprofit grocery store for the community

Hi, I'm Wil. I've always dreamt of building something — not a business for profit, but a store for the community. Due to recent global events and all that has been happening in the PH, I think the best time to start building that dream is now.

THE PROBLEM:

Living in the Philippines, rising living costs are pushing basic necessities out of reach for ordinary households, and the burden is heaviest on those with the least room to absorb it:

• As food prices climb, low income families are eating less, cutting corners on nutrition just to get by.

• Transportation costs are compounding the problem. Higher fuel prices are pushing people out of their own vehicles and rely on public transportation.

• Public transportation cannot absorb the shift. Commuters face an overcrowded, unreliable public transit system, some of the worst traffic congestion in the world, and streets that regularly flood, making every errand including something as basic as buying groceries costly in time, money, and effort.

THE SOLUTION:

I plan to startup a low-margin online grocery and delivery service focused exclusively on basic food necessities — rice, canned goods, eggs, vegetables, and other household staples.

Customers order through a simple online platform, and orders are delivered directly to their homes.

The model is described as “semi-nonprofit” because it is structured to remain financially sustainable while deliberately capping how much profit it takes: prices are set as close to cost as operations allow, rather than at what the market will bear.

Because orders are consolidated and delivered on planned, optimized routes rather than each household making a separate individual trip, this business offers a second, compounding benefit: fewer individual vehicle and commuter trips for grocery runs, which contributes to easing local traffic congestion over time.

THE FIRST STEPS:

1. I will start small — operate in a barangay level first and see how it goes.

2. I will need funding to cover some startup costs.

a. Warehousing/Storage/Headquarters - I know a very affordable space for lease within the barangay and very close to my home. Makes the work easier and efficient.

b. App Building/Web Hosting - I plan to subscribe and use Shopify for my storefront/online checkout (something I already have experience with) or I can build my own app and pay for web hosting/domain fees.

c. Trasnportation costs - For now, I will use my own vehicle for the deliveries but will have to pay for gas and maintenance costs.

d. Manpower - I will handle everything for starters, but, will need to hire help when work becomes too heavy.

The goal is: sustainability. Every revenue made comes back to pay for operating costs and every profit to expand and grow its operations.
